You load into Fortnite and instead of the lobby you get a message: "You have been banned from Fortnite." Maybe the game just shows as unavailable in the Epic Games Launcher. Either way, the first question is the same: what kind of ban is this, how long does it last, and is there anything you can do about it?

This guide breaks down every Fortnite ban type in 2026, what the ban screen and ban email actually tell you, how Epic's current cheating policy works, how ban waves hit, and which fix matches which ban. Some bans you wait out, some you appeal, and one kind follows your PC instead of your account.

What the Fortnite Ban Screen Tells You

According to Epic's own support pages, there are three places a ban shows up:

Read the Email First

The ban screen is vague on purpose. The email is where Epic tells you the ban type and length. If you can't find it, check spam, then check the Sanctions and Appeals Portal before you assume the worst.

Every Fortnite Ban Type Explained

"Banned" can mean very different things in Fortnite. Here is what each one actually blocks:

Ban TypeWhat You Can Still DoHow LongTied To
Matchmaking banLog in, use text and voice chat. You can't enter Epic- or creator-made experiences, including UEFN playtesting.Temporary or permanentAccount
Temporary account banNothing in Fortnite until it expires. Other Epic Store games still work.Up to 365 daysAccount
Permanent account banNothing in Fortnite on that account.IndefiniteAccount
Social banPlay normally, but text and voice chat are removed.Temporary or permanentAccount
Competitive banPlay normal matches, but no tournaments or competitive events.VariesAccount
Hardware (HWID) banNew accounts on the same PC get flagged too.Usually long-termYour PC

The first five are documented by Epic. Hardware bans are not described on Epic's support pages, but they are what players run into when a brand new account gets banned on the same machine without ever doing anything wrong. That pattern is the giveaway, and we cover it below.

Epic's Cheating Policy in 2026: One Year, Then Lifetime

In April 2025, Epic changed how it punishes cheating, and that policy is still the one in force:

This matters for what you do next. A first-offense cheating ban is not the end of the account, but it is your last warning on it. Get caught again on the same account and it is gone for good.

How to Check Your Ban Status

  1. Go to safety.epicgames.com
  2. Select Sanctions and Appeals
  3. Click Go to my Sanctions & Appeals and sign in with the banned Epic account
  4. Your sanctions appear with their status and duration. You can also search by the Sanction ID from your email.

How to Appeal a Fortnite Ban

Appeals only go through the Sanctions and Appeals Portal, using the Sanction ID from your ban email. Make sure you are signed into the correct Epic account. Epic Player Support can't review or appeal a ban for you, so emailing support or opening tickets won't speed anything up.

Be Realistic About Cheating Appeals

Appeals are built for false positives: a hacked account, a shared PC, a mistaken report. If the ban came from anti-cheat detecting actual cheat software, an appeal is very unlikely to reverse it. Don't count on it.

How Fortnite Ban Waves Work

Ban waves are why players often get banned days or weeks after they last used a cheat, sometimes all at once with thousands of other accounts. Anti-cheat systems don't have to act the moment they spot something. Holding detections and banning in batches makes it harder for cheat developers to tell exactly which update or feature got caught.

Practical takeaways:

Account Ban or Hardware Ban? How to Tell

This is the single most important question, because the fixes are completely different.

Signs of an account ban

The ban email names your account. The Sanctions and Appeals Portal shows an active sanction. A different, clean account still plays fine on the same PC.

Signs of a hardware ban

A brand new account with a new email gets banned or kicked on its first sessions on your PC, even though it never broke a rule. The same new account works on a friend's PC. Reinstalling Windows or Fortnite changes nothing.

If it's the second one, your PC's hardware identifiers are what's flagged, not just your account. Our guide to what an HWID spoofer is explains how that fingerprint is built.

What Actually Fixes Each Ban

Your SituationWhat WorksWhat Doesn't
Temporary or matchmaking banWait it out, or appeal if it was a mistakeContacting Player Support
Banned by mistake (hacked or shared account)Appeal with your Sanction IDMaking a new account before appealing
Permanent account banA new account, if your hardware is not flaggedRepeated appeals for a real detection
Hardware banA kernel-level HWID spoofer plus a fresh account and emailReinstalling Windows, a new drive alone, a VPN

For the hardware ban case, we cover what a working spoofer has to cover, why free ones fail, and the exact setup order in our best Fortnite spoofer guide. Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a Fortnite ban?

Temporary bans last up to 365 days and permanent bans are indefinite. Under Epic's current policy, a first cheating offense is a one-year matchmaking ban and a second offense is a lifetime ban. Your ban email states the exact duration.

Can I still play other games while banned from Fortnite?

Yes. Epic says a Fortnite ban does not stop you from playing other games on the Epic Games Store.

Does a new account get around a Fortnite ban?

Only if the ban is on your account and not your hardware. If a fresh account gets flagged on your PC right away, it's a hardware ban, and a new account alone won't fix it.

Where do I find my Sanction ID?

It's in the ban email Epic sent to your account's email address. You can also look up your sanctions directly in the Sanctions and Appeals Portal at safety.epicgames.com.

Bottom Line

The Fortnite ban screen tells you almost nothing. The email and the Sanctions and Appeals Portal tell you everything: the type, the length, and the Sanction ID you need to appeal. Matchmaking and temporary bans can be waited out, genuine mistakes can be appealed, and only a hardware ban needs a spoofer. Figure out which one you have before you spend a cent.
